By invitation of the Executive Director, I joined The Museum of Flight’s staff and large board (including their spouses) to facilitate the Museum’s annual board retreat in early 2020. After a short, lighthearted presentation of visitor motivation and experience frameworks, participants engaged in lively discussions to expand their thinking about people in museums. Who makes up this Museum’s audience, what do they need, and what do they bring to the table? We had fun together, and the event succeeded in infusing volunteer leaders with new ways to think about visitors and institutional mission. Discussions prepared board members for upcoming strategic planning processes, including revising the organization’s mission statement. Recent program offerings at MoF have been wonderfully diverse!
